"In a world where evil forces have effectively hijacked not only the public's peace of mind but the very thing we call "religion," it is truly heartening to find spirited artists like Dawoud who understand, experience, and live true religion through their art. The essence of all religion is spiritual connectivity with the Divine; who better than a contemporary Renegade Sufi to bring the classical mysticism of Islam to the modern world?"
Azhar Usman; Stand up comedian

IMPORTANT NEWS!
Dawoud will soon announce the launch of his NEW WEBSITE!

Who is Dawoud and what is Mystic Jaz?

Dawoud a New York City based sitarist, guitarist, composer, improviser, performer, and poet. He leads a multi-membered group who explores and contributes to the living musical entity he calls Mystic Jaz.

One of the main projects Dawoud devoted himself to is the development of techniques and innovations on sitar, including the incorporation and integration of eastern and western musical techniques; and the development of the sitar synthesizer (synthesizer that is triggered by the sitar). To the best of his knowledge, this is without precedent (excepting, of course, the brilliant innovations of the late Colin Wolcott of Oregon and the late Ananda Shankar).

After much research and experimentation, Dawoud formulated an approach to music that would employ elements of diverse music from India, Persia, Africa, etc., both modern and ancient, within a context of jazz (especially modal and free), blues, hip hop, and other American forms. Thus was born Mystic Jaz.

Far from being a mere hybrid of "world" music, Mystic Jaz is a music that produces an enlightening effect upon the mind, body, and spirit of the listener. It is his intention to extrapolate musical directions that have yet to come to pass.

Dawoud also plays guitar (electric, acoustic, etc.) bass guitar, dilruba, and programming.

During his life, Dawoud had toured the US, Italy, France, Switzerlans, and Denmark, released several independent recordings, produced and / or co-produced recordings with several artists, composed for theater, film, and dance, had radio airplay online, and throughout the US, Europe, Poland, Russia, and Indonesia, improvised entire concerts in an amazing variety of situations, and has over a quarter cenutry experience as a music teacher.

Many audiences have attended his performances, and listened to my recordings. All are left with the unmistakable impression that they have participated in a unique musical experience that transcends beyond mere entertainment, into the realm of the spiritual..
